Florist in Orewa Since 1976
50 Years of Flowers by Joanne
For nearly five decades, Flowers by Joanne has quietly been part of Orewa’s story — sharing in weddings, farewells, celebrations and everyday moments across the Hibiscus Coast.
What began in 1976 as a small local flower shop has grown into one of the longest-standing florists in Orewa, trusted by generations of families.
Still locally owned
Still independent
Still creating beautiful flowers for life’s meaningful moments.
1976 – Where It All Began
Founded by Joanne Slater (later Irvine) in April 1976, Flowers by Joanne first opened its doors in The Village complex on the corner of Moenui Avenue and Hibiscus Coast Highway.
Interflora records show that Joanne’s Florist became an Interflora member in May 1976, reflecting the shop’s early connection to the international floristry network.
The shop opened just three weeks before Mother’s Day that year. Its arrival was featured in the Rodney & Waitemata Times — marking the beginning of what would become five decades of floral service to the local community.

Growing With Orewa
After the original opening in 1976, Flowers by Joanne grew and changed alongside the Orewa community.
After opening in 1976, Flowers by Joanne grew alongside Orewa — building lasting relationships with generations of local families.
Over the years the florist moved through several locations within Orewa — including Moana Avenue, Florence Avenue and Bakehouse Lane — before settling at its current home at 5 Riverside Road in 2013.
Through each move, one thing remained constant: a commitment to quality flowers and personal service.
Continuing the Legacy
In 2000, the business was taken over by Barbara Everiss, who continued the tradition of serving the Orewa community with flowers for many years.
During her time, Barbara’s mother, Margaret Christie, was often seen behind the counter helping customers — a familiar and friendly presence for many in the community.
In 2018, a new chapter began — carrying forward the same care, creativity and dedication that have defined Flowers by Joanne for nearly five decades.
“It is lovely to see that after nearly 50 years, Flowers by Joanne continues to thrive in Orewa. I have many happy memories.”
— Joanne Irvine, Founder
