Flowers by Joanne was established in 1976, and for nearly five decades it has been a part of Orewa’s daily life — from small tokens of love and friendship to grand wedding celebrations. Always rooted in the community, the florist moved between a few Orewa locations before settling at its long-term home at 5 Riverside Road.

But the story of this little white building goes back even further. Long before the shop was filled with roses and lilies, it was home to a well-known electrical workshop. Operated by the Christie family, locals brought their radios and televisions here to be repaired — a central part of community life in Orewa at the time. Many long-time residents still recall visiting, and if you look closely today, you can still see the faint outlines of the painted words from that era on the windows.

This rich history was recognised in the book Orewa: Then & Now, a pictorial journey through the town’s past and present, where the building and the Christie family’s workshop were featured.

When Flowers by Joanne moved into this address, the transformation was both practical and symbolic: the workbenches became flower benches, the smell of solder gave way to the fragrance of seasonal blooms, and the building’s role as a community hub continued — just in a new form.
