Let Hope Bloom: Celebrating Daffodil Day with Flowers by Joanne

Spring’s bright promise arrives each August in Aotearoa, guided by the cheerful yellow bloom of the daffodil. At Flowers by Joanne, we’re honoured to join Kiwis nationwide in supporting Daffodil Day, the Cancer Society’s iconic fundraiser that blossoms with hope, community, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Why the Daffodil? A Symbol of Hope

The daffodil has long been seen as a flower of renewal and new beginnings. Back in the 1950s, volunteers overseas began using daffodils at cancer awareness events, and the symbol soon spread worldwide. Today, here in New Zealand, the daffodil stands as a bright beacon of hope for those living with cancer and their families.

Daffodil Day in New Zealand

Daffodil Day was first held in New Zealand in 1990, when the Cancer Society launched its first street appeal. Since then, it has grown into one of our country’s most cherished fundraising traditions. Every year, more than 600,000 fresh daffodils are grown and donated by local farmers, and thousands of volunteers take to the streets to sell flowers, pins, and collect donations.

This year, Daffodil Day 2025 will take place on Friday, 29 August (with some collections also happening on Thursday 28 and Saturday 30). Across Aotearoa, communities will once again turn yellow in a powerful show of solidarity.

How You Can Be Part of It

There are so many ways to get involved and make a difference this Daffodil Day:

  • Buy or Gift Fresh Blooms – Choose bright, local daffodils to display in your home, office, or gift to a loved one. They’re more than just flowers—they’re a symbol of hope.

  • Wear a Pin – The daffodil pin has become an iconic Kiwi tradition. Wearing one shows your support and helps spark conversations.

  • Fundraise with a Splash of Yellow – Host a morning tea, bake sale, or gathering with a daffodil theme. Every dollar raised helps fund cancer research and support services.

  • Volunteer Your Time – Join the thousands of Kiwis who help with street collections, distributing flowers, or supporting community events.

Why It Matters

One in three New Zealanders will be affected by cancer in their lifetime. The money raised on Daffodil Day goes directly toward:

  • Cancer research – Finding better ways to prevent, detect, and treat cancer.

  • Support services – Free help for patients and their families, including counselling, transport, and accommodation during treatment.

  • Community awareness – Education that helps reduce cancer risks and encourages early detection.

Since it began, Daffodil Day has raised tens of millions of dollars to fund life-saving work. Behind every coin dropped in a bucket or bouquet of daffodils gifted, there’s a story of kindness, courage, and connection.
